A PLATTER FROM BAYONNE
The maker of this solid silver platter is the French goldsmith Jean-Baptiste Delane, received master in 1757 and dead in 1807. This goldsmith was registered in the community of Bayonne (France).
The object is marked only with goldsmith maker's mark three times repeated, and nothing else (without tax farmer marks). This means that Jean-Baptiste Delane was a "maître abonné", a goldsmith exempted from certain formalities because his workshop was too far from the tax farmer.
What date can it be? A plausible hypothesis is that he was a "maître abonné" at the very beginning of his career, before being in the community of Bayonne, because the dating of the object (style) can be estimated around 1760.
